Arbitrator.  For over 16 years, Harrie Samaras has served as an arbitrator in over 150 intellectual property and commercial U.S. and international disputes.  Harrie has presided over cases under a variety of arbitration rules including those of the American Arbitration Association (AAA), International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR), International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). Harrie’s cases have covered a broad array of scientific and technological areas and products including: biotechnology, biochemistry, life sciences, chemistry, chemical catalysts, pharmaceuticals, computer science, software, mechanical engineering, medical devices, and diagnostic test kits. Her cases have involved infringement issues as well as contract and business issues relating to licenses and agreements involving research and development, commercialization, purchasing, clinical trials, manufacturing, asset purchase and sale, indemnification, distribution, and master services and license.

Experience.  Harrie began her career in intellectual property law as a Patent Examiner in the biomedical arts at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. After serving as a staff attorney and a law clerk to Chief Judge Helen W. Nies at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Harrie worked in private and corporate practice. In private practice, Harrie represented clients at the trial and appellate levels in intellectual property cases. In the corporate sector, she served as Director of Intellectual Property Litigation for a Fortune 500 telecommunications company and as Vice President Intellectual Property, Legal, for a business unit of a multi-national pharmaceutical company. In 2009, Harrie formed her own dispute resolution practice serving primarily as an arbitrator and as a mediator.

Education.  Harrie holds a B.S. and an M.S. degree in the life sciences, a J.D. degree, and an LL.M. degree in Patent and Trade Regulation Law.

Author/presenter. Harrie is a frequent speaker on dispute resolution topics for bar associations, professional organizations, and ADR institutions, including presenting webinars and Institutes on advanced topics for AAA, CPR and the American Bar Association (ABA). Harrie has also lectured to law, business and graduate students on the subject of dispute resolution. Harrie has written many articles on dispute resolution generally and its use in intellectual property and technology cases in particular, and she is the editor and an author of the recently published book, ADR Advocacy, Strategies, and Practices for Intellectual Property and Technology Cases (Second Edition), which the ABA’s Section of Intellectual Property Law published in 2017 (available at https://shop.americanbar.org/eBus/Store/ProductDetails.aspx?productId=280173389).

Recognition. Harrie is a Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators, a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators (CCA), and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. She is also on the peer-vetted Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center’s list of the World’s Leading Technology Neutrals. Throughout her career, Harrie has served in various leadership roles for professional organizations. She is currently serving as the Chair-elect of the ABA’s Section of Dispute Resolution and as a member of the CCA’s Board of Directors.
